Over the years, we have seen many products marketed as rim and tyre cleaners. Generally, cleaners labelled as “soft washes” are heavily acid-based. They depend on the aggressive nature of their formula to burn off contaminants, with the final removal by jet wash. To be effective a properly formulated soft wash requires agitation.

The mere fact that these so called “soft washes” require a final high pressure wash indicates they are relying on heavy chemistry.

Don’t use “Silicone” or “Solvent-Based” Cleaners!

Prolonged use of solvent products can cause discolouration and deterioration of your rims. In the case of Chrome Wire Wheels, the acid burn is noticeable with the chrome developing a “White Chrome” effect. None of these inexpensive options perform as expected, and any short-term benefits seen will be just that-short term.

Most competitive retail wheel and tyre cleaners on the market contain silicone. It is a cheap chemical transfer agent and cosmetic enhancer. Silicone-based products only provide a short-term visual enhancement. One week at best.

With regard to Whitewall Tyres, the silicone in these products will start to yellow the white in a short period. Constant use on whitewall tyres will result in a yellow/brown stain on the tyre. Additionally, most competitive cleaners are solvent-based. Again, this may deliver a quick, cheap cleaning service. However, solvent build-up will have a long-term detrimental effect on the rims and the tyres.

Exposure to solvents and VOC-based cleaners can have a severe impact on your respiratory system. This may result in coughing and shortness of breath,  and, in some cases, cause liver and kidney damage.

Long-term exposure may lead to more permanent respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder) and potentially lung cancer.

Like all machinery and equipment, the best way to look after it is by starting from new. Or, as is often the case with classic car detailing, from the day you acquire the car.

Some tips when using E-Valence Products:-

• Firstly, access the situation before starting. Is the entire tyre in need of a thorough clean? If this is the case, we suggest cleaning the tyre and the rim at the same time with E-Valence pH Neutral Alloy & Wire Wheel Cleaner.
• In the wash process, do the wheels first. This way, you won’t get “rim spray” over the area of the car you have just cleaned.
• pH Neutral Alloy & Wire Wheel Cleaner may be applied to a wet or dry tyre.
• Spray over the rim and the tyre and leave for 2-3 minutes, depending on the condition of the tyre.
• Gently agitate the rim and the tyre with a separate Microfibre Noodle Wash Mitt (Not the one you will be using to wash the car)
• Rinse off and continue with the car detailing process.
• Tyre Dressing – Silicone Free may be applied to a wet or dry tyre. Ensure you wipe the tyre dry as you apply the dressing to avoid flinging.
